AHEAD Third Scientific Symposium

9-10 June 2016

Marseille, France

Summary

The AHEAD Network, in conjunction with its partners, SESSTIM (UMR 912), AMSE, INSERM, IRD, and AMU, and with the support of the A*MIDEX Foundation,  organised it’s 3rd Scientific Symposium on the 9th and 10th of June, 2016, under the theme:

“Going beyond the measurement of inequalities in health and well-being in the Middle-Eastern and North African (MENA) region: What has been learnt and what is yet to be learnt?”

This symposium brought together specialists in the fields of health economics, public economics, epidemiology, sociology and public health, to discuss approaches to the measurement and interpretation of inequalities in health and well-being in developing countries (notably the MENA region).  It aimed to reinforce Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and to establish a sustainable partnership between the Aix-Marseille University and its partners North and South of the Mediterranean. The symposium helped pool together knowledge on questions relating to health and development.

Four main themes were covered by the symposium in the form of presentations and a round table chaired by members of the Aix-Marseille University and its Mediterranean partners:

• Measurement of inequalities in health and well-being
Moving towards Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) in the MENA region: Assessment and Options.
• Health systems and inequalities.
• Spatial inequalities in health.

There were 16 presentations by invited guests and AHEAD network members as well as interventions by internal researchers (SESSTIM and AMSE). Each session consisted of 4 to 5 presentations with discussions. The symposium concluded with a round table on the future research and networking collaboration in the MENA region.
