Ahmed Shelbaya is a faculty member at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, in the Epidemiology department teaching Global Health. He is also the Founder and Strategic coordinator of the NADA Foundation for Safer Egyptian Roads and a Health Outcomes Researcher with leading pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Shelbaya is a trained physician who practiced clinical pediatrics and neo-natal intensive care for nearly 14 years in developing country settings in Egypt and Sub-Saharan Africa, before being involved in public & global health. Ahmed’s public health work involved collaborating and working with Ministries of Health, the World Health Organization in Geneva, the World Food Program, the African Union’s CDC, designing the Global Framework Convention for Tobacco Control, as well as with other international public health and multinational organizations in New York. He has co-authored numerous publications related to Malaria, HIV, Hep C, anti-infectives, Oncology and health policy. Dr. Shelbaya holds Medical, MSC and MPH degrees from Cairo University as well from Columbia University.

- Contributed to a research study comparing the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of service delivery between reformed and non-reformed primary health care units.
- Spearheaded a statistical research study to define a tool for identification of underserved and vulnerable populations. This tool is being used in the formulation of a new exemption policy within the reformed health care system.
- Contributed to a costing study aiming at defining the cost of delivery of the Basic Benefits Package of health care for future use in resource allocation by the Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Organization.
- Produced a policy analysis study aimed at integrating family planning and reproductive health services with maternal and child health services. The paper defined the opportunities, obstacles and steps for integration within the framework of the Ministry’s strategy.
- Collaborated on a national strategy paper that included policies and activities needed for combating tobacco consumption after Egypt’s ratification of the International Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
