Jean-Paul Moatti is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the French Research Institute for Development (IRD). Prior to his appointment, Jean-Paul Moatti was Professor of Economics at Aix-Marseille University (AMU) and Director of the IRD/Inserm/AMU joint research unit “Economic and social sciences for health and the process of medical information” (SESSTIM), and of the Institute of Public Health for the Alliance of Health and Life Sciences, France. He is also a member of the Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR) at the World Health Organisation and a special advisor on foreign affairs to the director of the French National Research Agency on HIV/AIDS and Viral Hepatitis (ANRS). He has also been an advisor to the executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Prof. Moatti completed his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Paris 1 and has since conducted extensive work in the fields including, access to essential medications in developing countries; micro and macro economic analysis of health care systems in developing countries; microeconomic analysis of health risk behaviour and preventive behaviours; health inequality measurement. He has published extensively in peer reviewed journals including The LANCET, Journal of Health Economics, Health Economics, Social Science & Medicine.
