Call for abstracts: 2017 iHEA World Congress of Health Economics

Call for abstracts: 2017 iHEA World Congress of Health Economics, 8-11 July 2017, Boston
iHEA is pleased to invite you to join us in Boston for the 12th World Congress in Health Economics. iHEA Congresses are well established as the forum to hear new and hopefully revolutionary work in health economics. Our theme, Revolutions in the Economics of Health Systems, reflects this desire to provide a high quality and innovative program and to facilitate interaction with colleagues from around the globe in the city of Boston that is associated with many reminders of the American Revolution.

Highlights of the program include the confirmed plenary presentations by Carol Propper and Daron Acemoğlu. In addition, the Scientific Committee in close collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee are developing a number of Special Organized Sessions. There will also be an exciting pre-congress program.

Abstract submissions formally opened on 21 November 2016 and will close on 16 January 2017. We would like to encourage health economists to make submissions in the form of an individual abstract or in terms of an organized session. Submissions will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee and submitters will be notified of the outcome of the review process by 10 March 2017 and will be expected to register for the Congress by 31 March 2017, the date on which early bird registration will close.

Each parallel session will be 90 minutes, with a maximum of four presentations per session to ensure adequate time for discussion. Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words and should focus on research that has not been published or accepted for publication at the time of abstract submission. Organized sessions can either take the form of an integrated set of 3-4 presentations with considerable time for open discussion with session participants, or a panel discussion or debate that actively encourages participation. Proposals for organized sessions should include a 750 word description of the session, including how participant discussion will be promoted, as well as a 500 word abstract for each paper that will be presented. While individuals may submit more than one abstract, to foster diversity, each person will be restricted to presenting only one paper at the Congress.

In an attempt to ensure that every submission is reviewed by appropriate experts we ask all submitters to nominate the most relevant area of health economics as part of their submission. Broad fields of health economics are given below, but within each, the submission system will allow further refinement of area by allowing for the specification of a sub-field.

1.    Production of health, health behaviours & policy interventions
2.    Demand & utilisation of health services
3.    Supply of health services
4.    Organization of health care markets
5.    Health care financing & expenditures
6.    Economic evaluation of health
7.    Evaluation of policy, programs and health system performance
8.    Methodology
9.    Specific populations

The full list of broad fields and sub-fields is provided HERE.

In addition, the Scientific Committee has identified a number of specific research topics and encourages submission of individual abstracts that match one of the following:

•    Child development in less developed countries
•    Access to medicines in less developed countries
•    Big data and health economics
•    Improving outcome measurement in economic evaluation
•    Cost-effectiveness thresholds:  where are we now?
•    Shared Decision Making: The Patient Perspective
•    Implications of expanding access to mental health care
•    International comparisons of drug reimbursement approaches
•    The role of profit motivation in health care provision
•    Mixed public-private health systems
•    Waiting times for healthcare
•    Experiments in health economics
•    Demand and utilisation of prescription opioids
•    Demand and utilisation of health services among those with multiple chronic conditions
•    Low cost medical technologies in low- and middle-income countries

Successful abstracts related to these topics will be chosen to constitute what are being called Special Invited Sessions.  Abstracts that are not chosen for a Special Invited Session will still be eligible for inclusion in the program as part of other general parallel sessions. Further details explaining each of these topics are provided HERE.
