Online Summer School course: Inequalities in Health and Healthcare

Date and where: June 27 - July 1, 2022, Online

Professors Owen O’Donnell and Tom Van Ourti will be running the online short course “Inequalities in Health and Healthcare” on June 27 – July 1, 2022, as part of Tinbergen Institute Summer School program.

Content
The aim of this course is to provide students tools to measure health inequality. It encourages and facilitate evaluation of the normative foundations of inequality measures. You will become familiar with methods used to explain socioeconomic disparities in health and to identify inequity in the distribution of healthcare.

Level
We welcome research master’s students, PhD students, postdocs, and researchers with an interest in a quantitative approach to health inequality.
The course is targeted at economists embarking on research on population health and the distribution of healthcare, as well as at researchers from the field of public health wishing to become competent in techniques used by economists to analyze inequality in health and healthcare. The material is also of interest to cost-effectiveness researchers who want to broaden their toolkit to distributionally sensitive health economic evaluation.

Dear All,

Does Public Health Insurance Increase Maternal Health Care Utilization in Egypt?
Ahmed Shoukry Rashad, Mesbah Fathy Sharaf and Elhussien I. Mansour
ERF Working Paper No. 1076

Abstract
We assess the impact of health insurance on the utilization of maternal health care services in Egypt. A propensity score matching is used to control for baseline differences in the characteristics of the insured and uninsured women, to determine the difference in health care utilization between the two groups that is attributed solely to the health insurance coverage. The results yield that the national health insurance has a strong positive impact on most of the maternal healthcare indicators. Public health insurance coverage increases the likelihood of receiving antenatal care by about 7%, delivering in a public health facility by 8%, and the likelihood that a newborn receive vitamin A dose after delivery by 8.2%. However, women who are less educated, from a poor household, and rural regions, are less likely to be covered by a health insurance. The findings of this study would guide intervention measures that aim at improving health care utilization especially among the poor and other vulnerable groups.

iHEA is pleased to invite you to join us in Boston for the 12th World Congress in Health Economics. iHEA Congresses are well established as the forum to hear new and hopefully revolutionary work in health economics. Our theme, Revolutions in the Economics of Health Systems, reflects this desire to provide a high quality and innovative program and to facilitate interaction with colleagues from around the globe in the city of Boston that is associated with many reminders of the American Revolution.

Highlights of the program include the confirmed plenary presentations by Carol Propper and Daron Acemoğlu. In addition, the Scientific Committee in close collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee are developing a number of Special Organized Sessions. Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words and should focus on research that has not been published or accepted for publication at the time of abstract submission. Organized sessions can either take the form of an integrated set of 3-4 presentations with considerable time for open discussion with session participants, or a panel discussion or debate that actively encourages participation. Proposals for organized sessions should include a 750 word description of the session, including how participant discussion will be promoted, as well as a 500 word abstract for each paper that will be presented. While individuals may submit more than one abstract, to foster diversity, each person will be restricted to presenting only one paper at the Congress.

In an attempt to ensure that every submission is reviewed by appropriate experts we ask all submitters to nominate the most relevant area of health economics as part of their submission.
